Hosting Thanksgiving in a Small Home (and Loving It)

Your first home does not need a formal dining room to host a beautiful Thanksgiving. Some of my favorite holiday dinners happened around a card table and a borrowed folding chair or six.

Make the space work

  • Think in zones. Food in the kitchen, sitting in the living room, dessert on the patio. People naturally flow.
  • Go buffet style. It saves table space and nobody has to pass the heavy gravy boat over the toddler.
  • Use the patio. This is Arizona in November. Your outdoor space is a bonus room.

Borrow, don't buy

Folding tables, extra chairs, a second slow cooker. Your friends have them in their garages right now, waiting for their big moment.

Keep the menu simple

Make two dishes you love and let guests bring the rest. A potluck isn't lazy, it's community.

Why I love this topic

When I help first-time buyers, I always ask, "Where will you host the holidays?" Not because you need a big house, but because picturing real moments helps you choose the right layout. An open kitchen and living area can host more people than a closed-off bigger floor plan.

So whether it is 900 square feet or 3,000, the table is the house. The people make it home.

What is one dish that must be on your Thanksgiving table? Tell me in the comments. I read every one.
