Why Do You Make Me Worry So? A Realtor's Honest Guide to Ghosting

It's Halloween week, so let's talk about ghosts.
Not the spooky kind. The kind where we have a lovely phone call, you tell me you're excited about a three-bedroom in Casa Grande, I send you five great homes... and then nothing. Silence. Tumbleweeds. Me refreshing my email like it owes me money.
I made a little video about this (it's below), because honestly, every agent has felt it.
And every buyer and seller has done it at some point. Including me, with my dentist.
First, no judgment
Here's what I've learned after years of this. When people go quiet, it's almost never because they're rude. It's usually one of these:
- Life got busy. Kids, work, a car that decided to break down in 112-degree heat.
- They got overwhelmed. Too many listings, too many numbers, too many opinions from Uncle Rick.
- They're embarrassed. Maybe the budget changed, or the credit report surprised them.
- They aren't ready, and didn't know how to say it.
All of those are completely normal. None of them mean you can't come back.
How to un-ghost without the awkwardness
If you've gone quiet on an agent (me or anybody), here's the easiest text in the world:
"Hey Tina, life got crazy. Still interested, just slower timeline. Can we check in next month?"
That's it. I promise I will not be weird about it. I'll probably send a cookie emoji.
You can also just say, "We're pausing for now." That's a real answer, and it helps me a lot. It means I stop worrying and put a friendly reminder on my calendar instead.
What I'll do on my end
Here's my side of the deal. I'll keep my follow-ups useful, not pushy:
- One helpful thing at a time. A new listing, a builder incentive update, a market number. Not a wall of homes.
- An easy way to say "not now." You never have to explain yourself.
- Honest timing. If now isn't the right time to buy or sell, I'll tell you. Really.
For sellers, too
Sellers ghost too! Usually after we talk about price. If the number I shared felt like a bucket of cold water, I get it. Let's talk about it. Sometimes there are options, like small fixes or different timing, that change the picture. Silence just leaves you guessing.

Yes, I'm being dramatic. It's Halloween week. I'm allowed.
The bottom line
Ghosting happens. Life happens. The door is always open here, and there's no lecture waiting on the other side. Just a calm conversation about where you are now and what makes sense next.
So be honest with me, easy question: what's the number-one thing that makes you go quiet when you're making a big decision? No judgment. I'll go first: spreadsheets.
